Thanks to Melissa for the photos! Do you have photos we can include in the slideshow? You can add them to the dropbox folder, or email them to me! What a GREAT night! We sang beautifully, had SOOOO much fun and learned so much from Heidi!
Also, great job to Brooklyn P. for being our drummer for the Mass Choir Piece! Great job! HUGE thank yous go out to our wonderful parent volunteers, Sandra, Melissa, Deanna, for not only helping with polos, sitting with the choirs, and pumping up the kids, but also for being my pseudo-mom (holding MY things while conducting!). Our Heritage Family is pretty great. We only have two last events! These are the kids' favourites: primary pizza party and intermediate pizza party (both next week on regular choir days)! If you've volunteered with the choir this year, please come! Primary: Tuesday @ 12:10-12:45 Intermediate: Thursday @ 12:10-12:45 RSVP by email so I know how many to order for. [email protected] I am looking forward to next year's choir season! The STUDENTS get to choose the music!!! Yours musically, Miss Morris

To perform at this event, I will need 5 parent volunteers to help supervise and manage student behaviour, hand out polos, ensure polos are checked in after the show, and help with other small details. Without volunteers, we will not be able to perform. Thank you so much for being such a fantastic community for our musical kiddos to flourish in! Yours musically, Miss Morris If you can volunteer, please send me an email before Sunday, April 7 at 7:00pm. [email protected] Unsure what to do with your kiddos over the Spring Break? Well, here are a few things that might inspire some music in your lives!
1. Make Up Silly Songs Know any nursery rhymes? Change the words to some simple songs you know, write them down, and find some random things to use as percussion instruments to make it a real band sound! 2. Listen to CBC Music Always a good idea to support local music! 3. Practice recorder ...even if the parents aren't super in to it, they'll admire the perseverance. Maybe buy them some earplugs for their birthdays? Mother / Father's Day? Or just because! 4. Check out local events Go to https://tourismpg.com/events/ to see what's up throughout the two weeks. 5. Play another instrument If you have a ukulele, the adults might prefer that to recorder! 6. See a movie Can you count how many different pieces of music are in the movie you watch? How many have words? How many are instrumental? How does the music make the movie better or worse? 7. Play online games! http://www.primarygames.com/arcade/music/upbeat/ 8. Download an app! I like piano tiles... it's tough though. 9. Guitar Hero? Ever tried it? It's so tough, even for a guitar play such as myself! 10. Relax with some music of your choice Just hang out, put your favourite playlist on shuffle and let the music take you! Enjoy the break! See you in April! Yours musically, Miss Morris What a busy year for choirs in the music room!
Our primary and intermediate choirs both competed in the PG Music Festival. Primary Choir sang two beautiful songs, "The Little Birch Tree" and "The Bumblebee" and received a mark of 86%, receiving a gold seal! So exciting for them! Intermediate Choir sang two great songs, "In the Arms of an Oak" and "Touch the Sky" and received and mark of 92%, a gold seal, and an invitation to sing at the Showcase Recital on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019! With the help of some amazing parent volunteers, we will be meeting at Vanier Hall this Saturday to sing our song, "In the Arms of an Oak" for a large and diverse audience. There will be other student performances as well from the festival, with the entire show lasting about one hour. We will continue singing along until our final festival in April, Singfest! How exciting! Look at these Hawks, just ready to sing!
Choir sign ups were a roaring success Thursday at lunch time! 31 intermediate and 31 primary students signed up for choir, and they are so pumped for us to start singing next week! Choir Contracts are due by Friday, September 21st, so remember to sign them and send them back to school! We've got a lot of exciting things coming up, so check back in occasionally. I'll post important calendar dates, music, lyrics, songs, and tips & tricks on the website to help your child(ren) practice and sing their hearts out at home too! Thank you for supporting the Heritage Music Program! Yours musically, Miss Morris Welcome back to a new school year at Heritage Elementary!
I am so excited to get choir started and hear those beautiful voices! I bet they've been singing in the car ALL summer and they're SO ready to sing their hearts out with me in the music room! Choir sign ups are on Thursday, September 13th for both Primary (grade 2 and 3) and Intermediate (grades 4-7) students! It is a BIG commitment, with a LOT of pay off! I will be sending each choir member home with a contact that you will need to read over with them, sign, and return by Friday, September 21st at the latest. We start singing next week! Yours musically, Miss Morris Congratulations to our Primary and Intermediate Choirs!
We did an amazing job on Wednesday! The Adjudicator, Dr. Catherine Robbins, professor at University of Manitoba, worked with both choirs after singing their two pieces . Our Primary Choir sang the Canadian Folk Song, "Land of the Silver Birch / Canoe Song" and "Purple People Eater," arranged by Alan Billingsley. Dr. Robbins gave us some great compliments on our ability to sing as a group, and worked with the students for 15 minutes on really cool vocal techniques on how to hear themselves better! She gave us the mark of 86% on both songs! The Intermediate Choir performed Jim Papoulis' incredible "There is Peace", followed by "We Are One" from Disney's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. When Dr. Robbins worked with the grade 4-7 students, she focused on mouth shape and unifying vowels to produce a fuller tone quality. The choir got 89% on their first song and 86% on the second. Come check out the framed certificates in the music room, and have a look at your child's Music Festival ribbon. A HUGE thank you to our incredibly supportive parent volunteers, Janet, Jamie, Elaina, Katherine and Karen!!! They helped corral the students on and off of the bus and throughout the venue as well. Our Heritage kids stayed safe, respectful, and happy! If you see these parents around, please high five them! GREAT job representing Heritage Elementary - our students were DEFINITELY the best behaved of the whole group, and so tremendously respectful! Way to be HAWK students! Finally, keep your eyes open for a Choir Contract coming home with upcoming events on it! We are FULL STEAM AHEAD! Yours musically, Miss Morris Hello Heritage Family!
Our choirs had a special rehearsal during today's lunch-time practice. Elizabeth Klassen, a pianist of 13 years, joined us as our Music Festival accompanist! She really enjoyed introducing herself, meeting our students, and hearing their beautiful voices. She rose to the challenge of new repertoire at varying tempos. We also had a dear friend of mine, grade 11 student Brenna Jacobson from Duchess Park, join us as a vocal coach! She sang with the students and helped them feel confident in their abilities to sing two-part harmonies and rounds. The choirs are sounding fabulous as they continue to get ready for our first Festival ever! Intermediate Choir has their final practice on Monday, Feb. 26 from 12:10-12:50. Primary Choir has their final practice on Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 12:00-12:50. Please remember to send signed permission forms with all details filled out to the school so that I can confirm numbers with the bus company. Also, if you can volunteer on Wednesday, Feb. 28th as a supervisor during the festival, please head to the volunteer page and submit your name! Wishing you a Wonderful Wednesday, Miss Morris Hi Heritage Family!
The Friendship Grams were a success! The primary and intermediate choir members really had a blast singing "You've Got a Friend in Me", "Lean On Me", and "Count On Me." They delivered all of the grams (lollipops, chocolate bars, candy... etc!) to each division. They did a fabulous job and the whole school loved them! Next year, we'll definitely do it again, but I think the set up will be different. Stay tuned for more details! Musically yours, Miss Morris |
